Stainless Steel Sai

The sai is one of the most dynamic and iconic weapons in traditional Kobudo, with roots tracing across multiple cultures and early martial disciplines. But because it relies heavily on rapid flips, palm rotations, and forearm-backed blocking, an ill-fitting or front-heavy sai can cause wrist fatigue, poor technique, or even repetitive strain injury.

At Kobudo Studio, we do not mass-produce cast-iron replicas. Every single pair of custom sai is forged, ground, welded, and hand-finished out of solid 304 stainless steel, tailored precisely to your arm, hand, and grip dimensions. The result is an heirloom-grade martial weapon that feels like an organic extension of your own skeletal structure.

The Build: 304 Stainless Steel & Hand-Wrapped Grip

  • 304 Stainless Steel: Resistant to rust, pitting, and sweat corrosion. Unlike cheap chrome-plated steel that flakes and chips upon contact, solid stainless steel maintains its structural integrity and luster through years of intense kata and partner drills.
  • Hand-Forged & Precision Ground: Each monouchi (shaft) and yoku (side prongs) are shaped, balanced, and welded to eliminate dead weight and bring the center of gravity directly near the handguard
  • Custom Rope Wrap: Finished with a tightly woven, hand-wrapped rope grip , providing an ultra-secure, sweat-absorbent grip that will not slip.

Tailored to You: The 4 Critical Sizing Measurements

To build your custom sai, we require four measurements to dial in the shaft length, tsuba width, and handle diameter:

  1. Total Forearm Length: Measured from your fingertip to your elbow (ensures the monouchi clears the elbow tip during reverse forearm blocks).
  2. Index-Extended Hand Length: Length of the hand with only the index finger extended (vital for proper knuckle clearance and thumb placement).
  3. Palm Width (Open): Sets proper guard width and spacing.
  4. Palm Width (Closed): Ensures the handle length and wrap volume match your grip tension.
